We were pleased to welcome clients and visitors to Mawarra for our Ladies Day @ Mawarra Female Sale and the 53rd Annual Bull Sale.
Females and bulls went to a wide range of homes, from Far North Queensland through to Tasmania and the eastern states, reinforcing the adaptability and reach of the Mawarra program.
There was strong interest in proven cow families, with many buyers looking to build or strengthen the maternal base of their herds.
Across both sales there was a clear focus on cattle that work in commercial systems that are structurally sound, fertile, and capable of delivering consistent results year after year.
In the bull sale, the Whiteface offering sold 50 of 55 bulls to a top of $21,000 for Mawarra No Doubt V080, averaging $9,622.
The Angus bulls sold 39 of 53 to a top of $17,000 for Mawarra Venison V280, averaging $8,333.
What stood out to us was the consistency in what people were selecting for.
Cattle that:
- hold condition
- breed reliably
- daughters worth keeping
- and fit within practical, grass-based systems
Speaking after the sale with Struan Pearce from studstocksales.com, Marnie and Shaun Robinson said the opportunity to purchase females directly from the Mawarra herd was a key reason for their attendance.
“We’ve been looking at changing the foundation of our herd and starting to build a proper base of bloodlines,” they said.
The Robinsons operate a commercial herd of Poll Hereford females in the Buchan South district and selected six cows and one heifer from the offering.
“To add these mothers in and see how they cross with our bull and what the calves will do in terms of growth and performance is what we’re really focused on,” she said.
The Robinsons place strong emphasis on the structural soundness and suitability of their cattle for their commercial environment.
“We’re looking at hip width, depth and length of body, and good structure in the feet and legs because we run in hilly country,” Marnie Robinson said.
“We’d been hearing about Mawarra. I’ve seen the cattle that have come from Mawarra through the commercial sales… it’s something that we’ve been watching for a while,” Marnie Robinson said.
Return buyers and respected Western District producers, David Pepper (Spring Valley, Tahara, VIC) and Leon Wheeler (Wallacedale, VIC), both noted they had identified more than 20 animals in the Mawarra catalogue that met their three-tick selection system. In their view, a third of the catalogue offering would have suited their programs.
Both were able to secure their preferred selections, aligning with their budgets, early in the sale. David Pepper was the successful purchaser of Lot 3, Mawarra Nathan V221, for $14,000. Leon Wheeler purchased Lot 4 for $12,000 and Lot 6 for $18,000.
65% of the offering sold for under $10,000, highlighting the affordability of the draft.
